Long ago, I was honored
to receive a Creative Arts Exchange Fellowship from the Japan-United States Friendship Commission with support
from the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D.C. This involved
extensive language and cultural training followed by a year in Japan as
the guest of the Bunkacho, Japan’s Cultural Agency, based at the
International House of Japan in Tokyo. While there I had the opportunity
to travel widely visiting national cultural treasures throughout Japan.
I experienced immersion in Japanese culture and society, researched many
ancient gardens, sacred shrines and temples, plus had the privilege to
interact and exchange ideas with top professionals in business, arts and
government, even act as a consultant for embassies, consulates and
summarizing what actually happened.
private individuals plus present my ideas to a broad public
audience. As early pioneers of what would become a highly successful
international exchange program there was keen interest as to what impact
such an effort would have on the individual as well as the broader
community. To honor the 25th anniversary of the Japan-United
States Friendship Commission Creative Arts Fellowship program I recently
submitted a ‘progress’ report, covering my activities over the past
two decades. This report and the response from the Commission
